By Fausto Capello

The Swiss Army knife is an inevitable tool for the Swiss Army, adventure lovers and common people worldwide. It usually consists of six tools inside one knife handle and has a convenient size that can fit into your pocket. Thanks to the pivot mechanism which allows those tools to fit into the handle.

Only Victorinox and Wenger make genuine Swiss Army pocket knives. These products are often red and has Switzerland's logo on their handles. Everyday, not less than 34,000 of their main product are distributed by the company worldwide.

The Swiss Army Knife was invented over hundred years ago by inventor Carl Elsener. Elsener claims he invented the tool in 1891 and trademarked it in July of 1897. Originally, his intention was to create jobs for the people of Switzerland. The country had been left behind during the Industrial Revolution and people were leaving the country in search of work.

Victorinox came from the inventor's mother, Victoria. The company was contracted by the Swiss Army to supply them what then they called "soldier's knife". The US Army, when the product reached the United States, called it Swiss Army knife since the original term was in Swiss and American soldiers found it hard to pronounce them.

Swiss Army knives are still an essential tool for the army. It is also a must have for NASA space travellers and has reached outer space. It has been to Mount Everest, to the Arctic, and to the most virgin forests, as it is used by tourists. It is one of the most necessary tools in one's survival kit because of its multi-functionality.

Specifications include 9 centimetres by 2 centimetres. But never underestimate this little tool because it can contain tweezers, toothpick, corkscrew, screw drivers, nail files, scissors, saw, magnifying glass, ball pen, fish scalier, hex wrench, pliers and key chain.

Latest Swiss Army knives tend to address technological changes as they can go with USB flash drives, digital clocks, laser pointers and MP3 players but tend to be pricier.

Victorinox has numerous models of pocket knives ranging from scouting, fishing, huntsman, executive, and garden models suiting and catering every single type of individual and lifestyle.
