Wireless Keyboard - Basic Information and Buying Guide

By Holland Klive

When it comes to wireless keyboards, there are some things that you might want to keep in mind before you make your final decision. One of the best parts about owning a wireless keyboard is that you don't have to deal with the wires that can be messy and clutter up your workspace. You can also be free to take your wireless keyboard with you as you walk around a room, or even lay in your bed.

Although there are various options that come equipped with wireless keyboards, they do have some similarities that all wireless keyboards share. The main similarity is the way in which the keyboard can sync up with the computer. This can be done with USB or Bluetooth, and both ways allow the keyboard to communicate with the keyboard.

There is a piece of equipment called a dongle that is sometimes used with a wireless keyboard. A USB dongle is small like a flash drive, and plugs into the USB port. This makes it possible for the keyboard to connect with the computer without wires. There's also the Bluetooth dongle which is similar, and serves as the same function. If you already have Bluetooth on your computer, there is no need for a dongle.

Sometimes people will opt for the USB keyboard instead. If you go this route, you will definitely need to use a dongle. There is no internal USB like there is sometimes internal Bluetooth. So you will need to insert the dongle into any available USB port on your computer, and then your keyboard will be able to function correctly.

Wireless keyboards share some common themes, but they also have options that make them more user friendly for a variety of different tasks and user needs. Instead of just getting a wireless keyboard, you also have the ability to get a wireless mouse or a keyboard with a touchpad, which is vary similar to laptop keyboards. If you plan on moving away from your desk, a touchpad will give you the ability to move the cursor without having to use a mouse. If you plan on staying at your desk, a wireless mouse might be the best option for you.

Other options include the ability to set up the buttons to perform certain tasks. You will find some keyboards that advertise themselves as media keyboards, which basically means that they have a lot of keys that specifically target the media apps you might use. If you have any specific needs, you can easily read a description of a wireless keyboard to ensure it fulfills them.
